Resveratrol a type of phytonutrient know as a polyphenol, found in the skin of grapes, wine, certain berries and plants. Has been now coveted as a life-prolonging supper nutriant. Recently in a study it was found it can help prevent and protect animals from obesity, diabetes. However the animals in the study physiology is much different the Human Physiology in many ways. But in a first time study has recently shown that resveratol is able to rev up the metabolism help weight loss in primates. That means that these polyphenols can have similar effects in humans.
Fabienne Aujard, from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, France, with a team of scientists recently document the effect a diet supplemented with resveratrol impacted both the weight, metabolism and energy intake of six mouse lemurs. (Mouse lemurs have nothing to do with rodents. they are only Found on the African island nation of Madagascar, these are mouse-sized primates part of the same group that includes both apes and humans.)
The study, published in the BMC Physiology journal, showed that after four weeks of resveratrol added to their diet there were a significant decrease in both the animals’ food intake along with a reduction in the body-mass gain. What was also very interesting was that resveratrol had a significant effect on the changes of the animals’ body temperatures. It was found that resveratrol appears to reduce weight by increasing satiety (the feeling of being full) and also by increasing the resting metabolic rate, this is the amount of energy expended while at rest so that the animals ended up burning up more calories even when not exercising.
“We’ve found that lemurs eating a diet supplemented with the compound (resveratrol) decreased their energy intake by 13 percent and increased their resting metabolic rate by 29 percent,”Dr. Aujard said in a statement to the press. “These results provide novel information on the potential effects of resveratrol on energy metabolism and control of body mass in a primate. The physiological benefits of resveratrol are currently under intensive investigation, with recent work suggesting that it could be a good candidate for the development of obesity therapies.”
